Birds of a Feather - Better Together? Exploring the Optimal Spatial Distribution of Ethnic Inventors from a Knowledge Flows Perspective
نویسندگان
چکیده
We develop the knowledge flow production function (KFPF) as a flexible tool for modeling access to knowledge by individuals and economies. We focus on how knowledge flows are affected by the spatial and ethnic proximity of inventors, paying particular attention to how the two forms of proximity interact. In the context of three simple models, we show how the optimal spatial concentration for a city, a nation, and an inventor depends on whether co-location and co-ethnicity are complements or substitutes in facilitating knowledge flows. We then use patent citation data to estimate the key KFPF parameters. We find that both co-location and co-ethnicity do predict knowledge flows in our sample but that the marginal benefit of co-location is significantly less for co-ethnic inventors. Through the lens of our models, these results imply that a dispersed ethnic population is optimal from the perspectives of the city and the economy, in contrast to what is optimal for the ethnic inventor. Spatial concentration is the only stable equilibrium. JEL classification: Z13, O33, R12

Feather Pecking of Laying Hens in Different Stocking Density and Type of Cage
Both stocking rate and housing systems are main factors influencing the occurrence of feather pecking in laying hens raised in conventional cage system. This study examines the effects of different type of cage and stock density on feather pecking behaviour in hens. Total of 216 Hisex Brown hens at 16 weeks of age were randomly selected and put into 2 types of battery cages: conventional cages ...
متن کاملInventors on the move: tracing invertors’ mobility and its spatial distribution
This paper aims to provide insights into the phenomenon of knowledge flows. We study one of the main mechanisms through which these flows occur, i.e., the mobility of highly-skilled individuals. We focus on the geographical mobility of inventors across European regions. Thus, patent data are used to trace the pattern of inventors’ mobility across European regions, to track down focuses of attra...
متن کاملMolecular detection and characterization of beak and feather disease virus in psittacine birds in Tehran, Iran
Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), a member of genus circovirus, is a small, non-enveloped, single stranded DNA virus. Although BFDVs are among the most well studied circoviruses, there is little to no information about BFDVs in Iran. The aim of the present study was to detect and identify BFDV molecules from the birds referred to the avian clinic of The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Tehr...
متن کاملDeveloping the geographical space cognation through architectural experiences (Case study: A study of spatial cognation of primary school students in Tehran)
Since geographical space is a subjective space, due to the difference in the spatial cognation of different people, its perception can be changed from person to person. This cognation depends on the person's experiences of the environment and can be taught. On the other hand, the best age for this training is childhood. But this issue has received less attention. Therefore, the aim of this stud...
متن کاملOptimal energy management of the photovoltaic based distribution networks considering price responsive loads, energy storage systems and convex power flows.
Nowadays, presence of photovoltaic systems in distribution network is not without challenge and it may not have economic productivity for the system under the lack of optimal management. Energy storage systems are able to cope with this problem. Therefore, in this paper, a new method is proposed for energy management of the distribution networks in order to show that how presence of the energy ...
